About

TylrSlidr is a free plug-in for Wordpress. It allows bloggers to easily add flickr slideshows to their blog posts and pages.

While there are existing ways of adding flickr slideshows to a blog already (ex: flickrslidr), the current methods are not very intuitive, nor do they allow you to easily edit the post at a later point in time without breaking the slideshow code.

TylrSlidr adds a button to the WYSIWYG and uses quicktags to embed the slideshow into the post. This makes it much easier to come back to the post when you need to add/remove content.

How does this work?

This plugin generates the same embed code that Flickr does. It's using Flickr's flash slideshow application on their server. All this plugin does is make it easier to add these slide shows to your Wordpress blog.

Will the generated code keep my site XHTML valid?

YES! This plugin takes advantage of SWFObject 2 to embed the flash slideshow.

Can I include videos in my slideshow?

Yes. Currently, Flickr supports photos as well as video (as long as they are 60 seconds or less). The Flickr Slideshow Application can play both. I imagine if Flickr beings to support other forms of media, their slideshow application will be updated to support that as well.

This plugin requires Wordpress 2.6+, so make sure you at least 2.6 installed on your blog.

Extract all files from the ZIP file, making sure to keep the file structure intact, and then upload it to /wp-content/plugins/. This should result in multiple subfolders and files.

Then just visit your admin area and activate the plugin.

See Also: "Installing Plugins" article on the WP Codex

To configure this plugin, visit it's settings page. It can be found under the "Settings" tab in your admin area, titled "Tylr Slidr".

On this page you can configure 5 things:

  1. Default flickr user id
  2. Default flickr group id
  3. Default slideshow height
  4. Default slideshow width
  5. Position of button on the WYSIWYG

Finally, go write a post! You should see a new icon in your WYSIWYG. If you don't, you may need to click the 'Show/Hide the Kitchen Sink' icon to reveal more WYSIWYG buttons.

v 1.6: Now supports tag pools.

v 1.5: Tested for WP 2.8, now using SWFObject 2.2, and the new flickr slideshow swf

v 1.4: Changed wmode setting to opaque.

v 1.3: Support setting the wmode to transparent.

v 1.2: Updated and tested for WP 2.7 (some minor javascript/css updates)

v 1.1: Now takes advantage of the latest Flickr Slideshow, and uses swfobject

v 1.0: Initial release.

  1. hi. Thanks for plugin

    perfect.

    Regards

  2. Tyler and his slider have finally come together. Thanks for doing this.

  3. Tyler you so the man. That’s what she said!

  4. Very Useful, and long overdue.
    Great work, Tyler.

I’ll definitely be pimping this out.

  5. 404?

    I got a 404 error here:
    http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/tylr-slidr/

    Is it being debugged?

  6. Jaki-

Thanks for checking it out! However, I’m sorry you are having trouble at WP.com. Nothing is more frustrating when wanting to try out a plugin…

I haven’t touched the SVN repository since the beginning of December, and I downloaded it earlier today. And I’ve tried a number of other plugins – all are bringing back a 404 error. So it appears that their is something wrong with WP tonight.

In the mean time, you can download it off of my server here:
    http://tylrslidr.com/tylr-slidr.zip

(note to anyone in the future, download the most up to date off of WP.com, this file will not be maintained)

  7. Just a heads up, it looks like everything is fixed and back up and running.

  8. Thanks for the great plugin Tyler!

I have been searching for a simple one-click, no-code plugin to add Flickr images in WordPress. Your plugin is the perfect tool for my end users, simple and good looking.

And it even works great with WordPress MU!

  9. Hi there Tyler-
I’m new to this whole Wordpress process so my apologies for what might be a newbie question.

This is just the sort of plugin I’ve been looking for, but it isn’t currently working for me. I’ve installed the plugin and entered my UserID from idgettr.com. After pasting the link from my Flickr set into the prompt when posting, something isn’t working.

I’m getting a black box with the message “Oh No! We couldn’t find anything.”

I’m hoping this is a common error with an easy fix. Any suggestions?

Thanks for a great plug-in and any help you can provide!

  10. For anyone reading, the problem Homer had was that the set he was trying to pull into his blog was private. Therefore, Flickr won’t allow any photos to be displayed.

So make sure any photos you want to show aren’t marked as private within Flickr.

  11. This ROCKS!!
Any tips on how to change the slideshow speed?
or how to skip the initial splash screen and just show the paused slideshow?
    Thanks!!

  12. LastGreatRoadTrip-

I’m glad you are enjoying the plugin! I’ll check if the speed can be changed, however, I don’t think it’s possible as that is all managed within the flickr swf slideshow file.

  13. Hi there. I installed the plugin easily and it works well – except for one thing: it is not showing the photos I’ve added to my photostream since I installed the plugin. I’ve tried refreshing but that made no difference.

My photostream is here http://www.flickr.com/photos/martinjy/, and the Page I’ve installed the plugin on is here http://crosscountryskihire.com.au/wp/photos/. (That site’s in development)

    Any help appreciated. Thanks.

  14. Martinjy –

From looking at the code in your site, it’s pulling in the following flickr set:
    http://www.flickr.com/photos/martinjy/sets/72157617977948973/

Did you specify a set when writing that page? Could you paste in the Wordpress short-tag that the plugin adds into the WYSIWYG?

  15. Hi! Thanks for the plug-in!

I’m missing a couple of features: Auto start and loop. Aim is to run a slideshow of images free of GUI.

  16. @tyler

I want the plugin to show all the photos in the “favourites” set, which it does, but I’ve found that if I add new photos to that set later, the slideshow doesn’t update to show the new photos.

It’s not a big issue, I’m just wondering if I’m doing something wrong.

New URL is http://crosscountryskihire.com.au/photos/ (the site’s live now)

  17. @martinjy

I’m seeing every photo in your set. The slideshow that is embedded in your site is located here:
    http://www.flickr.com/photos/skihire/sets/72157618708259216/show/

One thing you may want to do is clear your cache, since it’s flash it could be a caching issue.

  18. @Mathias

While I’d love to add these features, the slideshow is actually the code and property of flickr.com. The plugin just lets you put the flickr generated slideshows (the one you get when clicking ’slideshow’ on flickr.com) on your own page.

So those feature requests will have to be directed to flickr.

  19. Hey Tyler!
Still lovin’ this plugin!!! One quick question from someone who is a total newbie to javascript/css:

I’m using Tyler slider in the sidebar and want to use flickr gallery in some of my posts. Problem is this – the lightbox of flickr gallery appears behind the tylr slider when it pops up. Is there an easy way to change which comes up in front by hacking either tylr slider or flickr gallery code?

    Thanks 1000000
    Sean

  20. Sean-

Thanks for using Tylr Slidr. In the settings for Tylr Slidr make sure you have the transparency set to opaque (it should be checked). This will tell the browser to allow other html elements to appear on top of the flash slideshow.

Let me know if you have any other problems!

  21. Hi, great plugin, congratulations.
    One question;
When I post my gallery the quality of the pictures is bad, lower than the originals in flickr. Why is that?
Thanks, and sorry for my english.

  22. Matias-

Do you have a link to the slideshow in question? Technically, it should be the same quality as the slideshow is Flickr’s. It should be the same as if you went to the slideshow within Flickr.

  23. This looks like a great plugin. I am new to this, so I’m sure I’m doing something very simple wrong. I posted this on my Photo Gallery page. The black box shows up, but it says no such photos found. Does anyone know what I’m doing wrong?

  24. Wow, Tyler! You ROCK! Transparency opaque totally fixed it!

  25. Wow. Just tried it and it worked! So easy. I was looking for a while for something like this. Maybe you should rename it Flickr Tylr Slidr to get more users.:)

  26. the plug in is only showing a third of the photos that have been uploaded into the group pool…any suggestions for how to fix this?

  27. Laurie-

Sorry you are having problems. However, when I went to your site, it scrolled through every photo in the pool that you link to. If you are still having problems, what did you enter into the tylr slidr window while writing your post?

  28. Hi Tyler!

I love your plug-in but I need one that pulls by tags, not by group. Suggestions?

    If only collections worked differently…

  29. Robbin-

Thanks for the feedback. Looks like Flickr finally added slideshows for tags! I’ve updated TylrSlidr to support this. Look for tag 1.6. All you’ll need to do is when adding the slideshow, just fill out step 2, and leave step 1 blank. For example, it could generate this:

    [tylr-slidr userID="" groupID=""]http://www.flickr.com/photos/tags/mouthoftruth/[/tylr-slidr]
  30. Hi Tyler,
    Great plug-in.
Would you have any advice on centering the slideshow and wrapping text in wordpress with you plug-in? I try all the code that I know and can’t seem to get it to work with this plug-in.

  31. Thanks, awesome plug-in. Appreciate your hard work on it!

  32. any chance you’d whip this up into a standalone package or provide instructions on using it on a standalone website. So excited when i saw then , then bummed when it was for wp only. The site I have for someone is a 3 pager, hardly worth theming in WP. purdy please?

  33. Steve-

In regards to wrapping text, that would need to be handled in the theme’s CSS. The slideshow is in a span with a class of “tsbox tsflash”

    Teemo-

You can already do this! Just go to the flickr set you want to embed, click on the slideshow icon in the top right, and once the slideshow starts click on the ’share’ button and it will give you the embed code.

  34. Hi Tyler
I’m trying to change the background color of tylrslidr to fit the background color of the site. So when the slideshow switches between portrait and landscape images there won’t be a black box.
The only css file I could locate with the tylrslidr plug-in was ts-jquery-ui.css but changing the background color hasn’t helped.

    Any suggestions ????

  35. Yogananda-

I wish I could help you with this. The background color is set by Flickr, and can not be overridden.

    Sorry.
